How to choose fabric for thermal and outdoor apparel

Build a thermal or outdoor fabric specification around climate, activity level, and garment layer. Close-to-skin pieces need moisture movement and comfort, mid layers balance insulation with stretch, and outer training pieces may require more weight, wind resistance, or a protective surface. This category ranges from 175 to 430 GSM and includes cooling jerseys, brushed interlocks, and heavier bonded constructions for different seasonal uses.

Select the structure according to warmth and mobility rather than GSM alone. Brushing can increase softness and heat retention, while bonded constructions add protection but also increase bulk. Before production, test stretch recovery, pilling, abrasion, colorfastness, seam performance, wash stability, and comfort during movement. Water repellency, UV protection, wind resistance, or thermal performance should be confirmed as project-specific requirements instead of assumed across every fabric.

Selected thermal and outdoor styles begin at a 200 kg MOQ; heavy bonded developments may require 1,000 kg. Share the garment layer, climate, target GSM, stretch level, color, finish, and order quantity before sampling so the recommendation matches real operating conditions.
